Google is reportedly preparing a major update for Gmail users. According to an official help document, users may soon be able to change their @gmail.com address without creating a new account or losing data. The document, currently available only in Hindi and shared via the Google Pixel Hub Telegram community, suggests the feature may launch first in India and roll out gradually.
Users would be able to edit their Gmail address while keeping the same account, inbox, files, photos, subscriptions, and settings. The old address would remain active, with emails sent to both old and new addresses arriving in the same inbox — effectively giving one account two Gmail addresses.
The feature will have limits: the address can be changed once every 12 months, up to three times per account, and a new address cannot be registered immediately after a change. Google says these restrictions are due to security concerns, as Gmail addresses are used for login, recovery, and notifications.
Previously, Gmail accounts were permanently tied to a single address, making a change possible only by creating a new account. While Outlook, Proton Mail, and Google Workspace already support address aliases, this would be the first such option for free Gmail users.
