Google is facing a lawsuit accusing the company of illegally collecting personal data through its artificial intelligence tool Gemini. The lawsuit was filed in the federal court of San Jose, California, and concerns the operation of Gmail, Google Chat, and Google Meet services.
According to the plaintiff, users previously had the option to enable Gemini manually. However, in October 2025, Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, allegedly activated the tool automatically for all users—without their knowledge or consent. This, the lawsuit claims, allowed Gemini to access personal messages, emails, and attachments stored in Gmail accounts.
The filing also states that while users can disable Gemini, doing so is not straightforward, as the option is buried deep within privacy settings. Until deactivation, Google allegedly has access to users’ full private communication histories, raising serious concerns about potential violations of privacy rights.
