OpenAI Acquires Historic Internet Domain Chat.com

OpenAI has recently acquired Chat.com, a historic internet domain first registered in 1996. Last year, Dharmesh Shah, founder and CTO of HubSpot, purchased the domain for $15.5 million. Shortly afterward, he announced plans to resell it, reportedly at a significantly higher price, though he initially did not disclose the new owner. Sam Altman posted the new address on Twitter. It has now been confirmed that OpenAI is the buyer. The choice of "Chat.com" without "GPT" reflects OpenAI's strategic rebranding, especially following the September launch of its new "reasoning model" series, beginning with version "o1."
